Unlike anything we've seen before, this device boasts a flexible pOLED display, supported by multiple batteries to enable its unique bending capability. Though it wraps around the wrist with a magnetic strip for a futuristic accessory look, it's designed not to fold, marking a bold step into the future of smartphone design.


Stepping into the spotlight is the Nothing Phone 2a, the latest brainchild of OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei's venture, Nothing Company, based in London. Positioned for the mid-range market, this is Pei's third venture into shaking up smartphone norms. After a buzzworthy augmented reality teaser earlier in February, the 2a was intriguingly presented in a glass box at MWC, with details sparse except for its MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro chip heart.


Meanwhile, with the U.S. market off-limits due to trade restrictions, Huawei showcased the Mate60 RS Ultimate Design. However, the limelight has shifted towards another Chinese powerhouse, Xiaomi, with their launch of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra. 


This camera-centric powerhouse not only brings top-tier photography into play but also introduces a sleek HyperOS interface and advanced AI capabilities, all powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. With a price tag of £1,299.00 for the 512 GB model, it stands toe-to-toe with the iPhone 15 Pro in both ambition and market positioning.

The larger than life Xiaomi 14 Ultra

The Xiaomi 14 Ultra stands out not merely for its prominent camera module but for its comprehensive suite of video capabilities. A dream for those passionate about videography, this Android phone brings professional-grade features within reach of the everyday user. 


If your world revolves around video creation and you prefer Android, look no further. The addition of a camera grip accessory enhances its usability, offering improved handling for those serious about their footage.


Kicking off with the specifications, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is equipped with a dazzling 120 Hz, 3200×1440 OLED display, powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. It boasts a hefty 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, complemented by a robust 5000 mAh battery. Charging is revolutionised with the 90 W "HyperCharge" feature, which boosts the battery from empty to full in just 33 minutes, and for those preferring a cord-free experience, an 80 W wireless charging option fills the battery in under 46 minutes.


Echoing the design language of its predecessor, the Xiaomi 13 Ultra, the rear of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra pays homage to the iconic leather-wrapped 35mm cameras, complete with "Leica" branding. The back panel, made from "vegan leather" — a nod to the classic camera aesthetic with a modern twist — surrounds the pronounced circular camera lens, reminiscent of a traditional camera. This blend of classic inspiration and modern technology encapsulates Xiaomi's innovative approach to smartphone design.

One step closer to a cyberpunk world with HONOR Magic 6 Pro

HONOR made waves at MWC 2024 with the introduction of its flagship, the HONOR Magic 6 Pro, a device brimming with premium features. Among its notable specifications are Qualcomm's latest high-end SoC, a large battery capacity, and rapid charging technology. 


However, the feature that truly sets the HONOR Magic 6 Pro apart is its groundbreaking camera system, including a 180MP 2.5x periscope lens that brings distant objects into sharp focus with its zoom capabilities.


Taking innovation a step further, HONOR unveiled a pioneering use of AI-assisted eye tracking technology that allows users to control the smartphone screen simply by looking at it. Demonstrating this capability, HONOR showcased a remarkable application where the Magic 6 Pro was used to remotely control a car equipped with custom servos and motors. 


With no one behind the wheel, the smartphone, through a specially designed app, could start the engine, and move the vehicle forward or backward by directing gaze at on-screen buttons for a couple of seconds. 


This collaboration with Autocar not only highlighted the smartphone's advanced features but also illustrated the potential for integrating smartphone technology with real-world applications, making the HONOR Magic 6 Pro one of the highlights of MWC 2024.

Nothing like a new mid-range smartphone

Nothing's flair for creating buzz has once again shone through with the introduction of the Nothing Phone 2a, their inaugural venture into the mid-range market. Echoing the aesthetic charm of the acclaimed Nothing Phone 2, the 2a version maintains the iconic Glyph lights, albeit in a subdued form, signaling its position as a more modest offering. 


While its true performance remains to be seen pending detailed reviews, the Nothing Phone 2a stands on the cusp of success, promising to deliver on both style and substance, especially if it hits the sweet spot with its pricing.

Prioritise eye comfort with NXTPAPER 14 Pro

The NXTPAPER 3.0 is a display technology that TCL has been developing for three years, aiming to reduce the harmful effects of blue light and glare on your eyes, while delivering stunning visuals and smooth motion.


The technology is based on a multi-layer screen that filters blue light by up to 61%, without sacrificing the quality of the images, colors, contrast, and natural motion. The technology also uses a new Circular Polarized Light (CPL) screen that simulates the natural light path, making the display look like paper under natural lighting. This makes reading more comfortable and natural for the eyes.


Another feature that TCL added to its NXTPAPER 3.0 technology is the DC Dimming technology, which eliminates the flicker that can cause eye fatigue and headaches. The technology also comes with a smart eye-care assistant feature, which monitors your viewing habits and gives you reminders to take breaks, adjust the lighting, and follow the digital health guidelines. The technology also has an adaptive color temperature feature, which automatically changes the color temperature of the screen according to the ambient light and the time of day.

Motorola’s bendable phone

This device pushes the boundaries of smartphone design with its flexible pOLED display that can wrap around your wrist, supported by multiple batteries to enable its bending capability. 


While it cannot fold, the ability to roll and conform to different shapes introduces a new level of versatility and personalization in mobile tech. Motorola's innovative approach may well pave the way for future smartphone designs.


The phone can also be used in different modes, depending on how it is bent. For example, it can rest on a table in an arched position, allowing two people sitting across from each other to use the screen. Motorola demonstrated how two people can watch a movie together or play a game of Connect 4 on the phone. 


The phone can also be clipped to a magnetic band that can be worn on the wrist, turning the phone into a smart bracelet. The interface adapts to show information on the top part of the screen.

The Gadgets That Stole the Show at MWC 2024 Barcelona

Beyond smartphones, MWC 2024 was a treasure trove of fascinating gadgets that promise to enhance our interaction with technology in daily life.

A Barbie phone?

One of the most unexpected announcements from HMD, the company behind Nokia, was its collaboration with Mattel to launch a Barbie feature flip phone. Yes, you read that right. A Barbie phone. 


The device, which will be available this summer, is designed to appeal to the fans of the iconic doll and to those who want to take a break from the digital world. 


The phone will be pink, of course, and will have limited functions, such as calling, texting, and playing some pre-loaded games. HMD did not reveal much else about the phone, except that it will be affordable and fun. The only images of the phone were pixelated, so we will have to wait and see how it looks in real life.

3D without glasses with Nubia Pad

ZTE has unveiled the latest iteration of its innovative glasses-free 3D tablet, the ZTE Nubia Pad 3D 2. This next-generation device leverages dual front-facing cameras to monitor the viewer's eye movements, delivering a compelling 3D visual experience without the need for special eyewear.

OnePlus makes a comeback with Watch 2

Lenovo goes transparent

Lenovo’s transparent laptop, also known as the ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop Concept or Project Crystal, is a proof-of-concept device that features a 17.3-inch Micro LED transparent display and a detachable see-through base that can be used as a keyboard or a tablet. 


The display has a high transparency of up to 55 percent when the pixels are turned off, and a high brightness of 1,000 nits when they are on. 


The laptop also has a rear-facing camera that can recognize and interact with objects placed behind the screen using generative AI and augmented reality software. Lenovo claims that the transparent laptop can open up new possibilities for work collaboration, creativity, and entertainment by enabling the interaction with physical objects and overlaying digital information.

Smarter living through Samsung Galaxy Ring

Samsung’s Galaxy Ring is a smart ring that aims to support smarter and healthier living by providing integrated insights based on health data collected during the day and night. The ring comes in three colors: platinum silver, gold, and ceramic black, and in nine sizes. 


The ring can measure various biometric data, such as heart rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen level, stress level, and sleep quality. The ring can also sync with the Samsung Health app on a smartphone or a smartwatch, where users can access more detailed reports and recommendations. 


Samsung says that the Galaxy Ring is designed to be comfortable, durable, and stylish, and that it will be available later this year.
